Spanish Digital Nomad Visa in 2023

In 2013, the Spanish government published the Entrepreneurship Law, regulations aimed at attracting foreign talents and investment to Spain. It included provisions for non-lucrative residency, golden residency, and various other types of residency. With the same motivation and a very similar objective, the government has now introduced a new law that focuses heavily on startups, talents, and innovation, on the condition that applicants can provide their services and activities online without being physically present at the employer’s company.

More Information

Digital Nomad Residency is designed for individuals who earn income through remote work and online activities from anywhere in the world and wish to live in Spain. The main requirement is that the source of income should not be based in Spain but rather through payments from a company or clients operating outside of Spain. This type of residency is planned with the aim of attracting capital to Spain.

Advantages of Digital Nomad Visa

  • Continuing work and earning income while living in Spain
  • Obtaining a one-year residency permit with the possibility of renewal for up to five years and eventually converting it into permanent residency
  • Accumulating residency years for obtaining Spanish citizenship
  • Including the residency of spouse and children
  • Prompt responsiveness from relevant authorities and organizations for processing residency matters
  • Visa-free travel to all European countries within the Schengen Area.

Requirements of Digital Nomad Visa

It is important to know that there are two types of applicants who can apply for Digital Nomad Residency:

  • Those who work for a company outside of Spain and the company allows the applicant to work remotely online. Through this arrangement, the applicant can continue their work, earn income, and live in Spain with the income received from this non-Spanish company.
  • Self-employed individuals who have scattered clients from different parts of the world, and through their payments, they generate income for the applicant. Self-employment activities can involve various online activities or providing services to clients outside of Spain without the need for physical presence. Examples include YouTubers, influencers, bloggers, translators, and many other professions.

Of course, it is also possible to earn income from Spanish clients and companies, provided that the maximum income of the applicant is not more than 20% (regarding payments within Spain) and 80% of the income source is from outside of Spain.

You either need to have three years of experience in a company or be a graduate of a reputable university in your field of work and earn income as an expert in that field in Spain.

One of the most important requirements for this type of residency is having financial means of 25,000 euros for a one-year residency for one person. If you have a spouse and children, you need to have approximately 10,000 euros as financial means for each family member in a bank account.
